Text history and attachment storage do not always age together. You may be able to read a 12-year-old Messenger message while the original photo, video or document it referred to has expired, been removed, changed permissions or is no longer exposed through the web session.
Message records and media resources are separate
A chat row may store enough information to show that an attachment existed while the actual file is hosted through a different resource URL or storage path. Those layers can have different retention and permissions.
That is why a visible thumbnail or filename is not proof that the original bytes can still be downloaded.

Common reasons an attachment fails
The sender may have removed it, the hosting URL may have expired, an old delivery mechanism may no longer be supported, permissions may have changed or the browser may not yet have loaded the media request.
Network filtering can also block a media domain while Messenger text still loads.

How to isolate an exporter issue
Try opening the same media directly in Messenger. If Messenger itself cannot provide the original, the exporter cannot manufacture it. If Messenger can open/download it but the exporter consistently misses it, that is a useful reproducible bug case.
Test a small number of affected items before rerunning a huge archive.

- Does the failure affect one media type or all?
- Can you reproduce it after reload?
Record gaps in important archives
For historical or business preservation, note known missing resources instead of pretending the backup is complete. Keep any independent original files you already possess.
An honest archive with documented gaps is more useful than a folder whose missing attachments are discovered years later.

- Keep sender/original copies where permitted.
- Re-run media collection after a temporary platform issue is fixed.

Why can I see a thumbnail but not download the file?
The thumbnail and original may be separate resources. The original may have expired or become inaccessible while a cached/derived preview remains.

Can deleted photos be recovered?
