Editing an existing PDF is different from adding a new text box. If the PDF contains a real selectable text layer, PDF Studio can let you select that text and replace it. Scanned image-only pages behave differently.
First check whether the PDF contains selectable text
Try selecting words in the PDF viewer. If text can be selected as text, the file likely contains a usable text layer. If the entire page behaves like one image, the document is probably a scan.
PDF Studio does not claim OCR for scanned/image-only PDFs, so text baked into an image cannot be directly replaced as if it were native PDF text.
How to replace selectable text
Open the PDF, choose the text editing workflow, and click or double-click the text that should change. Make the smallest necessary edit and review the surrounding line after replacement.
PDF fonts and layout can be complex. A replacement may not always match the original font metrics perfectly, especially when the source embeds unusual fonts.
Add new text when replacement is not appropriate
For a note, label, correction marker or annotation, adding a new text object may be safer than replacing existing content. New text can be positioned independently and removed again if needed.
This is useful for adding a reference number, review note or clearly identified correction without pretending the underlying source was unchanged.
Preserve originals for records
If the PDF is part of a business, legal or administrative record, keep the original unchanged and save edits as a separate copy. That distinction makes later review easier and avoids confusion about which file is the source.
Quick workflow
- Open PDF Studio and add the source files.
- Preview the page positions and choose the exact tool or page range you need.
- Build the output, review the order and generate the PDF or ZIP.
- Open the downloaded result and verify it before deleting the temporary workspace.
Questions people ask
Why can’t I edit some PDF text?
Scanned/image-only pages do not contain editable text objects. Without OCR, the original words are pixels inside an image.
Can I add text even when existing text is not editable?
Yes. A new text object can be placed on the page even when the source page is an image.
Should I overwrite the original file?
For important records, keep the original and use the edited document as a separate working copy.
